An extremely diverse wine producing region
The Loire Valley is the third biggest French winegrowing region
producing 52,000 Ha of appellation
wines (86 different appellations) across 14 departments.
The climate is temperate, with the river Loire and its many tributaries creating a multitude of microclimates suited to vine growing that create a huge diversity of wines. The region’s vineyards produce dry and sweet white wines, red wines, rosé wines and sparkling wines. The permanent pursuit of quality has given rise to wines of renown.
More than 2,000 years of experience
The vineyards of the Loire were first planted by the Romans over 2,000 years ago. But it was only in the 5th century that the culture of the vine really took off thanks to the religious orders who optimised cultivation methods and profited from good transport and communication links.
From the second half of the 16th century onwards, foreign wine merchants established in Nantes contributed to the rapid development of commerce as their customers highly appreciated the large palette of wines available in the region. Today it is a wine growing region that is very popular in France and at export, with one bottle in five being sold overseas.
